At first I wondered if the figure in the background would be a

distraction, but now I think his presence somehow reinforces the

sense of desolation here. What do you think?

It's a warts-and-all portrait of a grubby little boy - as most little boys are. And I think the background adds to the mood. I'd like to see a little more detail in his eyes - maybe a touch of dodging.

David, you have posted a number of fine photographs, but this one is in a class of its own. An extremely powerful image. The crossed arms, the face that seems much older than its years, the dark hollow eyes, the ominous dark buildings and then the one bright spot, the grandfatherly image over the boys right shoulder. Wonderfully constructed, a very thought provoking image. Reminiscent of the great photojournalist.

Excellent image and you are correct about the inclusion of the figure. Life is very hard in mining communties.

This is a timeless image to which the background and light contribute perfectly. I see this boy walking straight out of Joyce's "Dubliners." His face is contemporary and yet at the same time he evokes the classic character of his people. Your work is exceptional.

Wow, I can't believe how strong an image this is. It makes a major connection to this viewer. Another excellent image in a great portfolio!

I am looking at this picture almost everyday. Somehow i have been attached to this boy. this is not like a picture. Every part of his face tells different stories. If it was possible i would like to get a large beautiful print of the picture. For me, this one is the most beautiful one in your gallery in all terms. Technically and aesteticly. I have never been impressed that much by any photograph.

It's great to see a good photograph being recognized occasionally on P.N.
