uk 0 Posted February 6, 2004 Persevering in poor weather enabled this shot of fleeting sunlight on a simple subject. Please critique as your comments are appreciated. Link to comment
belvin 1 Posted February 6, 2004 Great picture, I wish the sky had a little less noise in it. Link to comment
mclaine 0 Posted February 7, 2004 You got your hands on a pre-release sample of Velvia Gary? The composition is classic, I like the way you let the tree, rocks and grasses speak for themselves. No overcomplicated arrangement, no overemphasised foreground as it's so easy to do with the biogons, or any wide angle really. First let me say I like it very much as it is, but then as you've obviously enjoyed a bit of a play with it in photoshop, please forgive me for offering the following observations. I'd personally love to see it with a bit of a dodge on the tree, brighten it up a little. Then the snow cap in the background. I think the snow cap provides excellent compositional balance to the tree, and although the snow is in obvious shadow of a thick cloud, I wonder how you'd feel about brightening it a tone or two? Finally, I appreciate the simplicity of having the top 50% blue, to balance the bottom 50% of complementary orange, but I just wonder if it's too blue? I can actually see one small patch of genuine blue sky, but for the remainder of the sky, perhaps a more natural look might be obtained with a slight reduction in blue. What do you think? (Apologies for rambling) Link to comment
uk 0 Posted February 7, 2004 Please don't be surprised when i tell you that this is almost untouched by PhotoShop. I cropped it and used curves to darken it down a little, typical S curve technique. The colours come from the scene and its impact on Velvia making the original trannie a superb image. Scanning enhanced the blue a little, but not half as much as 'save for web' and uploading to photo.net. Itried three saves to get it right and by then the first comments were coming in so I've left it. I am looking again to soften the colours a little, but I don't want to damage the overall appearance. Best regards, Gary. ps still love your pics Link to comment
BruceSturm 0 Posted February 7, 2004 Gary, This shot is a variation / closer crop of a previous photo recently posted? I like this one better! Even though you loose the stream I focus on the 3 elements of the shot - tree, sky, and, ground. I am taken by this photo and enjoy viewing it time and again. Congratulations on a nice photograph. guy_mansford 0 Posted February 7, 2004 This is brilliant. Yes its oversaturated, but that's the velvia look and nothing to do with scanning. Your use of the 6x6 format is excellent. I suspect some people need to get their monitors calibrated if the colours look wrong. Keep up the good work! Link to comment
mclaine 0 Posted February 7, 2004 Yours is obviously more faithful to the original transparency, but just to satisfy my curiousity I had a crude play with it myself, to see how it would look with three slight tweaks of a dodge to the tree and the snow, and a slightly less blue sky. Afterthought: Wouldn't it be great if the tree was still alive? Link to comment
