Nice scene, but poor composition. All I see is a boat in the direct center of the scene. You took the picture instead of making it.

David - Being there and "taking the shot" is already ultimately more than NOT taking the shot. And sun rise often changes a scene so quickly, that one shot is all one gets.

But this shot could be probably differently cropped to make it more original.

Nice shot! Love the colors! I also like the fact that the boat is heading toward the only bit of land in the shot... hints at a story which makes better photos, I think... also the boat is starting to head out of the reflection in the water and into the mist/fog in front of it...

Sometimes the best shots are taken at the right moment & the right time... "making" a shot work sometimes means... the shot doesn't work...or worse yet: you miss the shot... I take photos that I sometimes think PROBABLY won't come out... but if I didn't take it... I miss the shot... so what?? I just waste a frame of film...

David Lier, I noted your comment above and checked out your folder and postings; like the judge said to Michael Jackson after he showed up late, "you are getting off on the wrong foot with me" By posting unconstructive comments or cryptic remarks you're not doing anybody any good. I happen to like this picture "as taken" which really is the effort itself. Additional input into the picture, as you are referring to is really a bunch of BS.

Joe, I like the photo....liked it enough to open it up after looking through the top rated photos, which is saying something in itself.

and what I see is probably a photo taken from another boat or pier (which means hand held) and with the boat moving away from the pinks the shot had to be focused and composed quickly enough that he got it all, which means somewhat of a snapshot. Was he successful? 10,000 other people thought so, and I agree.

Did David Lier take this information into account before his likely 1 second look at the photo? did he think about what the photographer had to do (what were the circumstances) to get the shot. I would guess that 75% of the photographers submitting photos to photo.net are trying to take the best possible photos given limitations that professionals (mostly) dont have to worry about....which ultimately comes down to time, time, and probably money.

Regrettably, I found myself crtiquing photos when I first discovered photo.net in a similar fairly unconstructive fashion...that is saying the obvious, and not thinking about what the photographer had to do to get the shot. Its obvious that photographers like V. Tylor and Yuri Bonder (just to name a few) have alot of time at their given locations, spend the energy to make beautiful shots happen, and have the technical skills to bring it all together.

perhaps the difficult thing in providing a helpful critique, is that we view photos from a diverse set of photographers all with different skills, equipment and locations.

guess the bottom line is give a little thought to your critiques.
