Paycockes is a 15th century house in the village of Coggeshall in

Essex, UK. It was built by the wealthy Paycocke family and makes use

of typical local materials of soft red bricks and oak framing. This

is a detail of the north facing front (Plague came from the south so

face north whenever possible). The more carving you have on your

house the more wealthy you are!

I like this one - strong lines, nice lighting, muted tones and a bit of orange to spice it up. Nice composition.

Beautifull detailled monochrome. If that's the door in the center I am curious of how to get inside. Wonder if you have made one from the front as well?

Thanks Hans. I only took one photo as there was not a lot of time and a view camera takes 20 minutes for each set up. Can't remember where the front door is.

Nice light for this. Nothing harsh and directional. Enabling the subtle silver hues of old, unstained timber to come through. Good detail too in the tracery and herringbone of the red sandstone brickwork. Like it. I dont think it would have been in the same league on a bright sunny day.

On an aside, is the building seriously this plumb? Have you corrected for 400 years of leaning?

Thanks Phil. It is all quite straight for a 15th century timber frame. Must have been well built. The light is down to the front being north facing and overcast weather. It is a NT property with both house and gardens open one day a week.

Wonderful texture in the tudor panneling, counterpointing the natural hues in the brick work. The plethora of verticals, and the found "lattice" works well here.
