dcphotog1 0 Posted January 29, 2004 It's amazing how many people on here are using the Sony DSC-F717 camera. I know it's high res and has a ziess lens, but I have never known anybody with one. Most people I know use slr cameras to do this caliber of work. Link to comment
peter_kervarec 0 Posted January 30, 2004 Hi Todd - this is ingenious and so creative. The light on this side of the balls makes this a cracker of a shot! Link to comment
1000wordsphotography 0 Posted January 30, 2004 Everything is in the perfect place, the pool balls, the light, the shadows, and great color too. A winner. Link to comment
kristupa 0 Posted January 31, 2004 Good and fresh idea. Interesting object. Nicely composed. Good play with shadow. Might be better without a horizontal shadow lines Link to comment
david_smith35 0 Posted January 31, 2004 Very imaginative, with great use of colour and excellent lighting. Pity about the dark shadow running horizontally across the image. Link to comment
thomas_collins1 0 Posted January 31, 2004 What a great concept indeed! I love the mixture of colors and pattern. I have to agree with the above statement about the horizontal shadow however and how the light falls off a bit sharply from one end to the other. One way to solve the lighting problem would be to use a powerful strobe placed futher away so that light fall off is not as great throughout the picture. Remember the Inverse Square Law of light fall off. How about an encore?! :-) [added comment]: Ah, now I see after looking at your other pool table shots, that the shadows are simulating a window frame, as if the balls were being lit by natural light coming through a window. I think in this case because of the sharply defined shadows that it looks like it was shot in a studio. In order for it to look like natural window light, the shadows would have to be be considerably softer. A high powered strobe through a large softbox would work to create the effect that I think your going after. Then the window frame would make more sense, however if you desire to retain the sharp shadow patterns, then I would suggest removing the window frame shadow as it competes with the balls. Encore, encore!! :-) Link to comment
toddlaffler 0 Posted January 31, 2004 I know, I don't like it so much myself either. But there was little I could do about it since my light source was direct sunlight through a window which created that shadow where the two windows meet. I used some white foam core to reflect some light back into the frame (at the bottom) you can even see my hand in the 2 balls reflection. I liked the shot, but I think it can be better, maybe I'll try again. Thanks for all the nice ratings and comments. Todd Link to comment
thomas_collins1 0 Posted February 1, 2004 Todd - I'm amazed that this is direct sunlight. I guess I was expecting window light to be much softer than this. I stand corrected. Live and learn. Wow! Link to comment
toddlaffler 0 Posted February 1, 2004 This was taken late in the day so that added to the "harshness" of the light, as the sun was low casting dramatic shadows. Aslo there were no blinds of any kind on the window to diffuse the light either. Todd Link to comment

bexta 0 Posted October 13, 2004 Very original. Nicely placed balls, I see you had planned it out so that the shadows wouldnt overlap or engulf each other. Link to comment

alinux33 0 Posted March 18, 2007 That's simply great. Never seen this before. The lighting conditions are very tricky, excellent exposure, neat idea, perfect execution. My hat's off! Alin Link to comment
