A picture is turned into monochrome because color wouldn't work, and that's exactly what happened here. When capturing this image, the camera's White Balance couldn't get it right possibly due to the cold or wet snow, so there was a strong yellow cast that couldn't be repaired in post-processing. Pity, given the beautiful scene and pure white snow; showing this in color would have made all the difference.

Michael, this is beautiful... simple and evocative of another era. and if you haven't already done so, you should go back with the new post processing technology nine yers later and try again. I'll bet you ditch the yellow cast now.  That said, a yellowish cast can be very mood-enhancing giving the look of an antique photo.

Thanks for dropping in, Sandra. I have almost forgotten about this picture, and looking back at details it was shot in 2002 - 11 years ago! How time flies now that my memory is jogged.

You've made a great suggestion and I think I will dig up the original to see if anything can be done. This was shot with a 3MP point and shoot Sony that only had JPG, so I can only extract so much even with today's more sophisticated software.

I have great memories of this picture. It was shot in the middle of the night after the very last snowstorm of the year where the snow is heavy, wet, and sticky. The scene only lasts a few hours then it's melted by the morning so timing is everything. I try to make it every year for those special scenes. :-)
