hi Alec... The question I have is, is there any reason that all photos must be gray? Is there any more information that is necessary to understand what's going on in this photo?

The minimalist movement from the early 20th c. sought to remove everything that is unnecessary to an image - be it photo, drawing, or painting.

This photo with full tonal range is nothing in particular, but by removing the clutter of the middle tones, IMO, this image becomes nostalgic and dreamlike - a faded memory of days long ago, soon to fade into oblivion.

This image with full tonal range was drab and of no particular interest. By taking a

minimalist aproach I removed the drabness and IMO left only the barest of essential

details. To me it is wistful and nostalgic... a memory of days long past soon to fade

into oblivion.

What do you think?

by "removing the clutter of the midtones" I think you removed almost all the information in that photograph. It is a little bit too minimalistic for my taste. If the "remains" of that person were not there it would be impossible to recognize that it's a beach scene. Unfortunately I don't see the relationship between nostalgic and no picture information either - sorry, but thats art behind my horizon...

well I don't understand all that photo-mumbo jumbo...but I do understand creative writing words: "a memory of days long past soon to fade into oblivion." And after reading that, I like the picture.

Try keeping a little of the color? Maybe a little blue of the water or so. Oooh, try keeping only the little kid in color...faded just a little and the give just a little color to the rest of the picture...

Okie i'll stop mumbling. I like it!
