markskelly 0 Posted January 16, 2004 Really powerful portrait. Her gaze is very direct. I sometimes hold my hand over one side of the face of portraits to show the 'two sides' of the subject's persona. When I did that to this one, I noticed how completely polar the sides were. Her left side (to the viewer) still seems hopeful - there's a touch of a smile. The right side, however, seems terribly sad. There's a bit of hair over the right eye that almost looks like an eyebrow that accentuates this. Really, this photo caught my attention and held it. My only criticism is that I'd like to see it more centered, maybe with a bit less on the left, and a bit more on the right. Anyway, you say this photo was taken in Sarajevo. I would like to hear the story behind it. Regards - Mark. Link to comment
mitch_codner1 0 Posted January 16, 2004 The Sepia effect melds beautifully with the power of this image. The dirty face, the emotion, I'm at a loss for words. POW material. Mitch Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted January 16, 2004 Very powerful image. That EFKE film is great. I understand it has more silver than the films available in the US which may account for part of the visual impact. Despite the troubles she's seen, the eyes still hold a ray of hope. Any idea what's become of her? Any filter used? Link to comment
alan chan 0 Posted January 17, 2004 I love this portrait, the tone in particularly. I am not sure the facial expression matches the title .. hope of everyone.. it seems that she is expressing a friendly smile in anticipation of some kind of reward. I would like to hear the story behind too :) Link to comment

sivakumar m. maniam 0 Posted January 18, 2004 fantastic portrait. I feel when i see the image. As mark said so emotion runs throught this portrait. I would the same to have the image centred, but i guess such shot was not easy to get too. In all its a beautiful shot. Of all the digital technology, the old fashion photography still ends with the picture perfect. Congratulations. Link to comment

geronimo 0 Posted January 18, 2004 This is the kind of street portrait that reaches inside you and grabs your emotions. Technically speaking, the execution is excellent. The tonality is beautiful. Link to comment
peggy_jones 0 Posted January 19, 2004 for me, while this portrait is poignant, for the overall toning and with her expression and the hair, I find that technically this image falls short because the darkroom work (digital or otherwise) is much too and unsubtly overdone. much of the problem with the toned down background could have been more easily and effectively handled by simply cropping more of it out. in that case the visual impact of her framed face would have been heightened far moreso, and the toning also done on the hood and scarf would become less apparent.
