I like the colors and composition of this photo. The crystals didn't come through as clear as I would have liked to have seen (that's probably not your fault), but this is an interesting theme that you might want to continue working on. Very nice.

I took tens of shots the same day. Many of them of ice crystals. One thing I noticed is that it's really hard to capture those crystals well. I concluded that ice as very refractive and reflective material needs stereo vision to be captured well. I've noticed that when you look at snow, you see a lot more glitter than appears on a photo of the same spot. But when you close your other eye, you stop seeing half of the glitter.

The next time we get ice flowers, I will try taking 2 shots and combining them. Hoping to get more realistic shots.

I don't have any filters for my digital cameras, but sometimes I hold my UV & polarizing filter from my film cameras in front of my lens to create a better effect. I also use items to block the sunlight from directly hitting the object I am shooting (anything from a tree branch to a folding Photoflex Lite Disc).

Thanks for your tips. I have a built-in ND Filter in my camera and I think I was using it when shooting the above image. I was going to buy an adapter to use filters with my cmera but after your comments, I think I'll just go and buy filters. Gonna invest on the adapter later 8)

I looked into your portfolio and you seem to like color quite a bit. Good work! Especially the 1007112. Finally an original butterfly-shot 8)

It's easier to write this in finnish:

Hieno kuvauskohde. Kaipaan kuitenkin jotain, kenties oranssia, kuvan alareunaan tasapainottamaan sommitelmaa. Tuo ohut oranssi reunus kehyksessä ei riitä. - But anyway, beautiful object and an appropriate title.

Noora said: "Nice subject. Still I miss something, perhaps orange, on the bottom of the image to balance the composition. That slim orange line on the frame is just not enough."

When I shot this photo, I was hoping that the reflection on the bottom was enough to extend the shapes created by the orange reflection and the ice object. I guess I could have spent some more time shooting this image but I was already frozen myself and walking on thin rives ice is not my favorite sports. I also didn't think the photo could end up this good and wanted to move already to a next shooting spot. And of course off the ice ;)

You mentioned something that is very important . . how difficult it is to recognize when we've got a potential keeper in the viewfinder (or LCD these days).

I think this works very well. The FG shadows and relfected black line add to the more obvious interest of the ice texture, and of course, the warm light.

I got 300D now and rely on the viewfinder only... I checked out your portfolio... Sorry, no time to check them out in-depth now but you're on my list :) Looked impressive.

I like the justapoxition between the -casual- regularity of the ice cristal and the abstract reflection on which it is sitting. I am fine with having the orange band only in that part of the shot, though: would it have been more than this, we would have lost the cristal altogether into that warm glow.
