Lightvessels or lightships served as lighthouses where waters were unsuitable for regular light house construction. Here, decommissioned and appearing abandoned at a terminal in the Oakland Estuary, The Relief (designated a National Historic Landmark) serves as a “floating classroom” and for me an interesting painting.
