An attempt to get a image of a vintage loco without any crowds of

people, as it would be in its heyday, that involved sitting on a

little rampart on this bridge as the train went past. pic taken 1998.

As always critiques and comments welcome

Lovely image!

Why do people love trains? Hmm I think for many reasons:

The raw horsepower that one can feel under one's backside - complete with swaying, noise et al - minus the g forces that come with planes!

The idea that it's taking you exactly where you want to go - along a SET path, not deviating a bit. Maybe it makes us feel that we arfter all in control of our lives.

I like it- you can almost feel the ground shake.

Why people like STEAM trains- you can see the engine parts move! Unlike most other vehicles...

I too like the grain and contrast of the film, nice shot, nice composition. The picture could be darkened a little, might give it a richer feel, but that is just my 2cents.

Yes Chris, it was real, but steam I think from a boiler vent, further back along the engine, rather than smoke from the furnace, which would issue from the stack just behind the headlight. and thank you all for your positive comments!

Well done, Erin! I tend to like train shots--especially steam-driven locomotives--so I was primed to admire your image, but this photo really has an awesome quality about it. I can picture you perched on that bridge waiting for the crucial moment. Good work!

Great shot Erin. Love the grain on this and framing, perspective is good. And of course the horse. I was a brakeman a long time and most of the old engineers were from the steam era...so heard endless storys. You could almost equate steam/diesel to film/digital lol 6/6
