The Iron Army !!!

The Invasion from Mars

Focus distance: Infinity. Shutter speed: 1/30. Aperture: f/5,6. Tripod and cable release. I was on my way home via Hellisheidi when I noticed the interesting light behind the pylons. Time was four o?clock in the afternoon and the sun was going down. Temperature was minus few degrees. While driving by those pylons, I have often thought about making image like this one with my 300mm lens. Well, here it is and I am happy with it. The slide and the scan are precisely as I saw the image through the view finder that day. The Iron Army is a peaceful army which brings us light and quality of life. The smoke behind it (NO POLLUTION) is from a well; bore which has been made in an experimental-purpose for an intended steam power hydro more faraway. Here we have pylons and powerlines and the title is "The Iron Army" or perhaps "The invasion from Mars?" What do you think? Image best viewed Large. Thanks in advance for your ratings and comments. Image dedicated to my dear friend Inga Josefsdottir. Copyright: Baldur Birgis

MINUS A FEW DEGREES!!?? Ugh!! If THAT'S what it takes to get such gorgeous pictures as you always take, I'll gladly live farther south!! :-)

Great sky, Baldur! Interesting choice of foreground, as well.

I like this very much, Baldur. The pylons become sculptural art through your lense. And I don't think I see any polution. I understand it's steam from the underground, and I think I know that your main energy source in Iceland is geothermic power. Regards

hello Baldur, i like very much this new theme and picture. Geometry of the smoke that come in counterpoint of the rythm of electric lines is really strucking. Colors are really pleasant too.
As the first thought seeing this picture is pollution and that it is not true , i would propose a less symbolic title like "experimental geothermy" that would be less ambiguous in my mind.
between your two titles, i prefer 'iron army'.
have fun.

This is gorgeous...a strange word to use for these iron structures, but they appear almost lacy in their sihouettes, and very delicate. The colors are outstanding as is the composition. Nice work!

Interesting image, Baldur. I think the title "Iron Army" fits well....I envisioned this convoy moving away from the battle that has just taken place in the distance. Nice light on the steam.

This is beautifully composed to me. The repeating towers marching off into the distance like alien giants, the tense lines piercing the edges of the frame and the smoke are compelling and suggest a War of the Worlds.

Excellent!! It seems an unreal image, but causes a great impression

Very fine work. Only preference here would be to shave a bit off the bottom as its heaviness of dark tones tends to draw the eye.

Excelent shot as usual.

That really is a formidable army and one that

is not getting any smaller in Iceland.

The pilons almost look fake here, strange effect. I would like to see this without them, with just the land, sky horizon, but of course that's another photograph. :-)

While some times, cables seem to be a mess, here they are a pleasure to the eye. One of the few times that nobody will say to clone out the cables... The background is also fantastic.

Juan and Armindo: Thank you for your thoughtful comments. When I noticed the light, I thought: This is a challenge and with my 300mm f/4L lens I think I´ve made what most people would say unattractive things look interesting and maybe even nice. This is my way to look at these things in a positive way. As I´ve said before: The Iron Army is a peaceful army which brings us light and quality of life.

Kind regards, Baldur
