I always have liked taking pictures of people who have their pictures taken, because of the poses and expressions that go with it. The uniformed men are looked upon with slight contempt by the bearded guy that's in the much 'cooler' group of people walking by. I had much fun in editing the scan of this Agfapan 100 negative and I feel I'm starting to get to get the hang of it. There is so much going on in a street scene like this, in the pre-cellphone era (thanks for reminding me, ZT). As always, your comments are very welcome.

That's a wonderful slice of time, Vincent. There are so many interesting little vignettes in this shot, the hip group of young people inserting themselves into the shot of the military guy (even as they are all inserted into your photographic record); the crowded steps in the background (the Spanish Steps were the one "attraction" I managed to miss on my trip to Rome); and even the conversation of the strolling couple on the far right as she pours out her thoughts to her attentive companion. A lot to see and enjoy. The picture reinforces what we already sense: everything changes but then again, not so much

Hi Jack,

I guess you're right about the notion that everything changes, but not so much. There's a lot we can recognize in photos from the past, most of it being part of what psychogolists would call collective unconsciousness. Thanks for your great comment, Jack! Kind regards, Vincent

Vincent, if I were forced to compare this image with the previous one, I'd have the inclination to like this one better. Despite the fact that each one portrays myriad of activities going on, this image shows the stairs somewhat more clearly and effectively. Again, having not been there, I now can thank you confidently for the travelogue. Picking up on Jack's remarks, I really like how you captured the five person processional in lockstep, at least almost. - -My best always, michael

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your friendly comments and honest opinion! I agree with you on the point about the Spanish stairs being more prominent in the photo. The people that make the photo what it is, are just lucky coincidences that helped me. Kind regards, Vincent

Vincent,

I think You started a good trend on PN of refreshing film (I call them analog) photos.

I just commented on one of Michael's (Linder) photos.

Captures with not just historical or sentimental value...

.... But also expressing yourself through photography.

Hi ZT,

thanks a lot for your comment! My decision to buy a new (film) scanner was based on the fact that I, as you rightly state, have expressed myself through analogue photography for many years. I don't want to lose touch with how I interacted with the world photographically during those years. I started to upload some scans and am happy to see the response. As Jack said: "everything changes but then again, not so much". Kind regards, Vincent

I really like B&W for street scenes and people, Vincent. Fan Ho would be someone to check out. There is quite a paradox between the uniformed and the rest of the people in the street. A complex and intricate image with many variables to encounter. Fantastic capture. Best regards, Paul.

Hi Paul and Dana,

thank you for another great comment! I'm familiar with Fan Ho's work; it's exceptionally inspiring, although I'm equally influenced by European photographers like Doisneau. This street scene just had to be captured and I'm glad I did. Kind regards, Vincent
