This is a pretty good first effort, but to be a top class picture, the player's eyes should be sharp. You have focused on this foot.

Secondly you should be able to see his standing foot as well as his kicking foot. Shooting with the camera held vertically might have been a better option.

One thing to do is to study pictures in newspapers and magazines and see what makes those pictures stand out.

As the first poster suggested, having more of the players body in focus would help a great deal. I guess you could try again or perhaps try a slightly faster film...say provia 100 or push velvia to 100 to give you a bit more speed. That might let you freeze the action still while padding your depth of field. Or just try changing the point at which you focus.

Looks like you've got some good colors and the light seems good as well, not harsh. Overall I'd say its a very good start with some minor changes you should have some high quality photos indeed.

One of the hall marks found commonly in many first rate sports shots is that the background is well controlled - it is either nicely blurred off or the various out of focus elements are arranged in a more pleasing manner. Currently yours then to draw attention to wonder what is going on behind the kicker.

As the previous poster said u need to do yr homework or it will remaind make believe.
