stever 0 Posted November 17, 2003 Hi Margaret, Well, I'm a sucker for verticals, so right away, I like this better :-) Also, the leaves at the bottom, since you can see more of them, now "support" the composition - I think they're fine. I like the fact that this version just about eliminates the strong vertical line of the curtain pleat on the right.I really like the soft-focus flowers and the detail of the backlit lace - who says the foreground has to be in focus? You did a good job breaking the rule here.Excellent! Link to comment
guido_fulgenzi 0 Posted November 17, 2003 This is the best version, the cropping remove the part that in my opinion was to confusing. Link to comment
boneheadmx 0 Posted November 17, 2003 Out of the 3 that I have seen, I like this one the most. It is much more balanced than the others because the subject it much tighter with the vertical crop. Link to comment
abintraphoto 0 Posted November 17, 2003 Another vote here. Thanks for the tech details, etc. I think not having a tripod limited your creative options regarding dof. Varying the dof and the distance between the flowers and curtains will give you varying degrees of the effect you are trying to achieve. Also be aware of the focal plane of your film and its relation to the 'scene'. That can affect your dof choices too. Experiment. For the effect you are going for (soft) I would consider a diffusion filter too. I believe these come in 3 levels of 'diffusion' ................ I'm glad you mentioned the connection between the pattern of the curtains and the flowers. I like it now that I'm aware of it and the shadows on the flower petals is pretty cool too. Link to comment
baldurbirgis 0 Posted November 17, 2003 Margaret: The composition is the best in this one for my taste. I also like the softness. Kind regards, Link to comment
alan chan 0 Posted November 17, 2003 The simpler the better, i also opt for this one :) comparing the three postings. I am still a little uneasy about the overlap of the two tulips - too picky :) ? Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted November 17, 2003 This is my favorite, too. I prefer simple compositions when it comes to flower shots. This one seems much more balanced than the other two. Link to comment
francescomartini 0 Posted November 17, 2003 For me..this is the better version!! More simple and more focus!!! Is better also the vertical cut!! Link to comment
jfochoa 0 Posted November 17, 2003 Me too... I prefer this version. The softness is ok and well balanced. Congrats! Link to comment
margaret_s. 0 Posted November 17, 2003 I decided to experiment with something new. I welcome your thoughts and comments. Link to comment
joel_le_montagner 0 Posted November 17, 2003 For me too, it's the best. No distraction with the others elements. Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted November 17, 2003 Yup ... I seem to be last to weigh in! I like this one the best of the three. I never did have a problem with the soft focus on the flowers in the original shot, but this version eliminates the section of curtain that was very much in focus, which I found distracting. I also like the leaves that you added to the bottom a LOT!! It really balances the picture. YES ... I WOULD hang it on my wall!! Thank you for asking for my thoughts. I look forward to more of your experiments!! :-) I'm curious, though ... I'd love to see the flowers in their original color. Maybe you could e-mail as an attachment....? Link to comment
donnaalbers 0 Posted November 17, 2003 Since I don't usually take soft pictures I was curious to see if you could make this work and I think you did. I like the addition of the leaves on the bottom since it provides some balance and I'm glad you removed that sharp curtain line which drew your eye into the wrong part of the picture. Link to comment
nher 0 Posted November 18, 2003 Margaret, this is another different story. You can see the comments. Carry on. Regards. Link to comment
gaetanchevalier 5 Posted November 18, 2003 Much better version. Good exposure and nice composition. Link to comment
margaret_s. 0 Posted November 18, 2003 I guess it's unanimous! OK then, I trust you on this one :) The leaves you see in this photo are original. I added one leaf on the other photo (the reworked horizontal version). No biggie. Glad this one hits the spot. Again many thanks to all for your generous help! Link to comment
jos www.inpix.biz 0 Posted November 18, 2003 Well, I am in agreement...I like the vertical too...interesting to see the process in action of someone else's creativity. Thanks. Link to comment
armindo_lopes 1 Posted November 18, 2003 Also very good. The bright background makes the tulips jump out of the frame. Very nice composition. Regards. Link to comment
dave_k1 0 Posted November 18, 2003 Excellent composition...I like the natural lighting and curving lines of the stems. Well Done!! Link to comment
John Peri 1,039 Posted November 19, 2003 Margaret actually, I prtefer the other one. I wonder what Anna Pagnaco would have done with this. I think that she would have opted for a cristal sharp picture, but I certainly see the merits of a soft approach too. Link to comment
WJT 653 Posted November 19, 2003 I like it. The composition, color, soft effect, and layout all work well together. I was once told by a well know PhotoNet photog never to photograph two of anything; but I disagree. I am glad you do too. This allegory would be impossible otherwise. Regards. Link to comment
sammm 0 Posted November 20, 2003 I can almost feel the wind coming through the curtains, and the sharpness of the pattern on the tulips lets me feel the light and warm. This is a very emotive photograph. The softness of the foliage also direct my eye right up where you want it while adding some interest. Nicely done. Link to comment
ljk 0 Posted November 20, 2003 Hi Margaret...my 2 cents. The background folds of curtain here adds a fullness to the image, without demanding attention, and works to support the delicate rendering of the tulips.I love how the soft focus appears at times like a pastel drawing...I like this version best too.
