jimmcnitt 0 Posted November 15, 2003 Kim: All four of your flower distortions appeal to the experimentalist in me -- although this one is my overall favorite by a very narrow margin. What I admire here is your sense of restrained playfullness which is perhaps most noticable in the pinwheel effects. Also, the color palette seems just perfect with pale pinks, whites and a yellow/orange accent against a dark green background. Finally, the thing which I like about all the photos in this series is the way you managed -- though your camera angle and manipulative techniques -- to maintain the essential textures of the leaves and petals. This lends the entire image a sense of depth and subtantiality. Best --jim Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted November 15, 2003 Thanks for your kind comments. I love "playing" with PS, but sometimes people don't seem to like anything other than "real" photos, so it's nice to see others like the manipulated images, too! Link to comment
kevinbriggs 0 Posted November 16, 2003 I know you may not want to, but could you provide a little more information as to exactly how you are manipulating these photos within Photoshop? Just wondering... You certainly do not have to give away your secrets if you don't want to... Excellent work! Link to comment
california-seascapes-photo 0 Posted November 16, 2003 Very underrated photo, you have quite a talent here. Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted November 16, 2003 I use a distortion filter in PS, plus a lighting effect, as well. On this one, I also used the "twirl" filter only in some specific areas (used lasso tool to select them). You have to start with a "good" image, or it just doesn't work. PS will not "fix" a bad image with these filters I'm using here. Your original needs to be sharp with good lighting, although you can adjust levels to fix lighting somewhat. For each decent distorted image I get, I probably discard 10 others because they don't work. The cropping also affects what you end up with. I can take the same image and crop it five different times before I get what I want. So it's not clearcut and simple to do this, but I think it's an interesting take on common flowers. Thanks for taking the time to look! Link to comment
donnaalbers 0 Posted November 17, 2003 You have so many elements working beautifully together in these images -the flow of the lines, texture, lighting and color. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted December 10, 2003 I wish I could add more to the discussion on this, but the essential lyrics have already been song to this magnum opus! Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted February 28, 2004 I've printed this one out 11x17 - looks pretty cool. I can barely remember now what all I did to it. Thanks for the comments. Link to comment
spohn 1 Posted June 4, 2004 Really, really nice Kim. This photo really stands on it's own well - the manipulation, even though obvious, isn't really much more than an afterthought (for me, at least.) Just got a call that my new camera (D70) is waiting for me at the store - now I'm more fired up than ever! Link to comment

markboyer 0 Posted October 6, 2004 This is gorgeous, an up-to-date Marsden Hartley-type feel. This is one photo that makes me want to try different things. Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted October 6, 2004 Mark, if you've always wanted to be an artist, but lacked the talent, PS and/or photography is another way to express your creative side. I've printed these flower distortions out on canvas paper and they look like a painting. Link to comment
steve_bingham 0 Posted July 17, 2005 It looks like we think alike in this vein! I, too, have a whole series of distorted flower pictures! www.dustylens.com Aren't these things fun. Link to comment
