Paint By Light Dogwood

greg_givler

This is the result of my first few attempts to paint with light. I used my external flash to light the tree during a long exposure. Since I was expermenting I found that one of my pictures had great detail in the trunk and lower branches and another had highlighted the upper branches more. Also one of the photos had the tailights of a passing car which I felt added to the photo. So I decided to combine the two photos and this is the result. I brought them in a played with the opacity of the layers to get the right amount of detail. Then cropped the photo so that it basically filled the screen, resized it for the web and did Unsharp Mask on it. Comments are welcome.

Nice job. I've done a lot of this kind of thing with trees, myself. I find a really good flashlight quickly panned over the surface of the tree works best. A little practice and you get it very even with a single exposure.

Greg, the way to get comments is to give them and ask for reciprocation. Even so, you'll get maybe one or two for every ten or twenty you leave. You might also post a little larger. This one is too small to really look at - at least on my 19" monitor.

Here's the critique: There is a too much dead foreground space and the composition is too centered. The whole thing is flat and two dimensional. The good part is that it isn't like every other photo.net photo.

Hope this helps.
