mike_johnston 0 Posted March 7, 2004 A beautiful if essentially decorative picture. Technically the photographer makes excellent use of the square. If I were he I might have blurred the water a little less, but that's the photographer's artistic decision and we mustn't second-guess. Aesthetically I find my eye going to the stonework under the water for a sense of specific place; otherwise the picture looks less documentary than "fabulous" (i.e., as if illustrating a fable) and its tonality reinforces that. In style it does obviously reference Michael Kenna but there is nothing wrong with that. If there is any reservation I have, it's that the picture primarily conveys a mood, and this it gives up immediately; I think I like pictures that are tougher to "get," richer in meaning, less transparently "arranged," that unlock their secrets more slowly. But that's just my taste, a personal impression rather than a criticism. Link to comment
the eggman 0 Posted March 7, 2004 Should anyone still doubt the boundry between photography and fine art, this should shut them up. On par with the masters, and I REALLY hate saying nice things. E Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted March 8, 2004 I like the square, the tone and the overall composition of this picture. Agree with previous comment that the fort is a bit too much close to the left border... personnaly i would have preferred it with a little more step back (or shift from 80mm to 60mm lense). Contrast is also fine. Looking at his portfolio, Gerard has definitely a very elegant and personal touch. you can see almost same place with a totally different mood and format Here taken by Pascal Proust Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted March 8, 2004 My only question is whether it was edited on the computer? It has that certain look about it, perhaps too perfect or something? Link to comment

the photographer1 0 Posted May 31, 2004 Nothing wrong with this image. The water looks worm enough for a baby to swim in. Link to comment
