Evening Color

saratogatravel

This shot was taken aperture priority with a tripod. The scene was pretty dark but that is what drew me to it. The trees in the back seemed to glow in the late afternoon light. I tried to capture the quiet diversity of the scene including the colors, tree branches, reflections and objects floating. It came out as good as I hoped. I hope you like it. As always your feedback and advice is appreciated.

Sorry to go against the tide, but it seems to me that a substantial reduction of lightness would be beneficial to this photo from the aesthetic point of view, and would also capture the tones of a wood in late afternoon much more realistically. Some monitors may show this image darker than mine, but then it is the monitors that need a calibration...

i'm sorry but this is just screeming out manipulation. just look at the halos around the trees from where it's clumsily been selected and feathered. there's also definition in some leaves but not in others where fiddling has lost detail.

by the way, i'm really sorry if its not.

I appreciate the feedback. To answer the manipulation question. There is two things that were done to this picture. First, the picture did not have great contrast so I did manipulate levels to increase contrast. Second there was a small section of sky to the right of the red tree which was distracting at best to the photo. My choices were to crop off the top of the trees or clone out the sky. I liked to have all the red tree so I cloned out the sky (clumsily I guess). The top of the red tree is somewhat overexposed and I think this added to the loss of detail and added brightness. I tried not to get carried away trying to fix this as the tree is in the background. Anyways, that's all I did. Thanks for the comments.

Please click cropped to see a different crop of this picture where I crop out the sky vs. clone. Obviously, I also lost the tops of the trees. What do you think? I put 5 minutes tops into preparing this version. Thanks.

Cloning the sky is fine for me. The crop loses too much. I have nothing against small retouches aimed to improve the overall coherence and pleasantness of an image. I dare insist on the lightness issue - unless our monitors are calibrated in a completely different way, please try a substantial reduction of lightness and tell me if the image does not look much more equilibrated then.

Beautifull fall colours and great reflection. For me though it is a little over exposed but this is easily fixed in PS.

Please click darker to see a version where I reduced brightness. I do like it better though I wonder if in an actual print it might not be too dark. I'll print it and find out. Thanks for your input! This is the reason we put our photos here.

A beautiful photograph, of that there is no doubt, I love the reflections. It deserves a 6/6, for me it would have been 7/6 if (and this may only be my taste) the top part of the photograph wasn't slightly overexposed. I looked at the "darker" version but would have liked to see only the top part of the image darkened in PS. Anyway, great job and stunning colours...

firstly the clone is better than the crop.

the dark is too extreame to apply to the entire image, just the over exposed top.

I prefer the cloned vs the cropped version. For darker or not, I would almost have to see a print. I prefer the lightened version as the colors are more dramatic and I think you lose less of the "Kincaid" affect! Outstanding colors!
