Little Drummer Girl

I watch old movies all the time and am always fascinated by how many ways there are to use shadows in framing faces, adding to facial expressions and overall mood. There are the more subtle, graceful uses of directors like George Stevens (I Remember Mama and Penny Serenade) and the more extreme examples of Josef Von Sternberg (with Dietrich) and any of the great film noir directors. So this immediately appealed to me on that purely abstract level but it's the use of the shadows against the brightness of his face and clothing that strikes me, not really high contrast though the contrast is evident, but much more organic feeling in a lot of ways, especially as the shadow cups his head. Love the flower on his shirt, playing a very supporting role and the hand gesture which relates to but is also kind of severed from the drum. Nice work and exceptional exposure.
