Sundog

laurence_smith2

I noticed a red flash when moving along the beach, so I backed up. At just the right position, this Sundog would appear. I thought it was nice looking and unusual, so I stopped down to darken the rocks and bring out the color of the Sundog. Manipulated the image at time of shooting with the polarizer. I also manipulated in Photoshop by adding 12 points of Blue to give the sky a little more prominence. The resulting sky is pretty close to true. The Sundog really smooths out in the original high rez scan, but still looks decent here.

Wow! Any idea what causes this to happen? Do you think that mist (or sea-spray) in the air catches the light at a certain angle? This is quite red - was the sun a similar colour?
