Black Panther Party free breakfast program for children...Oakland, 1970

In the early 1970s, the Black Panther Party reached out to communities

across the country with a breakfast program that benefited thousands

of school-age children. The project was probably the party's most

successful outreach effort. This image has been licensed for use in a

PBS documentary on the Panthers scheduled for the fall of 2016.

Thanks so much for this. Aside from it being a wonderful photo—and congrats from me as well for its being picked up—it brings a little joy to my heart in what's otherwise been a devastating week. History seems to be repeating itself. Either that, or it's just been ongoing but we forgot to notice. In any case, this is a reminder of the good in people and makes me regret even more that we adults are responsible for spoiling the innocence of our children but can also be responsible for change and for doing them some good. I don't know what the solution ultimately is to hatred and the violence it breeds, but I do know that gestures like this and what it's documenting are a beginning. It's a way forward. You should be proud of having taken it, of having recognized the significance of this moment and what it represents.
