Requesting critiques on this fashion editorial shot. I'm looking for

opinions especially from other pro fashion shooters & people who are

interested in fashion photography.

Thanks

Eden,

I suspect that for editorial work there is some interest in the environment which your subject is in. using a flash at night means that you could tidy up like crazy but it also makes for a sterile setting that could have been in the studio.

Just a note, it is a fashion editorial..thus the focus is really supposed to be on the clothes/model not so much the surroundings. The concept "Fear and Loathing in Hollywood" is thematically a dark concept & the location is a city street late at night...so the use of little flash is intentional.

Thanks for your reply though. If it was a general editorial, not a fashion editorial, or if it had a less dark theme, I might have gone for more environment as you suggested.

You can achieve some interesting effects using flash at night, but I'd avoid pop-up or direct flash. The clothing is nice, but I'm not feeling the expression on the model. A few things you can try in the future. If you're going to use this flash set up again, try rear-curtain sync so that some of the natural lighting is recorded in the background. Tripod might be needed. You can also bring someone along who can help you with off camera flash. If you shoot with this model again, have her loosen up and just interact with you or someone else. The best poses usually just happen in a brief milisecond when they're not thinking about it. Good luck.
