Having experienced "verbal crap" from others recently, it sickens me all the more to read such comments as yours. Everyone has a right to their own opinions, so if you feel like this picture is a 1/1 then great for you! But to call someone else's work garbage or unimaginative only succeeds in telling me that you seem to either have a superiority complex or an extremely narrow view of what makes a good photo. I'm not saying that this photo is my cup of tea either, but I wouldn't consider it garbage. I have looked at your portfolio and see excellent work, but nothing so grand that I would follow your guidelines as to what is good art and what is bad.

BTW, the first 3 photos that come up on Hawkings page are not something I consider excellent. A bug and a couple of pictures at a protest. Wow, how impressive. What a knucklehead that guy is. Why bother commenting, let alone rating something if you don't like it. Why not just ignore it. It makes me wonder if he was an active participant at those protests. That would make sense.

 

What I like about this image is the reflection in the patent leather. I would hardly call this garbage, unless I was a misogynist or some kind of moral majority freak who probably listens to Rush Limbaugh. Yeah, how proud I would be to be one of those idiots.

This photo TOTALLY isn't my cup of tea. I think there is a story to tell in life and I want to capture beauty, love, etc. which I don't feel is the end emotion captured here.

 

THAT, however, is my thought and reason for picking up the camera. The one comment made that I COMPLETELY don't agree with is if you are going to rate something a 1/1 then why bother rating or critquing? Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I totally don't mind my photo's getting a low rating. As much as I love you guys, I really ultimately don't let my world revolve around my ratings here as a photographer. Sooo.. I don't mind a 1/1 rating (I would be bummed, but not majorly) AS LONG AS... the person comments. If you don't like a photo... COMMENT!! That should be a rule. THAT's what is great about this forum. Comment... explain why you hate a photo or why you love a photo so that that person can grow as a photographer.

 

Now that I've preached... :-) Other than my comments previously on this shot about the content, I could never call it unimaginative. Creative. Just not my thing.

Personally I think youre a lucky man. I think It's definately captured a different "angle" and it's unique. And like the reflection in leather.
