Amazing place. I hope the photographer was safe.

I know you take your time to setup and to study the scene and that has paid off as it usually does. From a technical perspective I think the foreground is a bit too white compared to the other parts of the image.

While I would keep the original in color, I would consider converting to black and white for a 2nd image.

I will attempt a BW conversion and try to recover some of the foreground but since I am not working with a RAW file I might not be successful.

All the best,

Thanks Pierre.

Thanks Tony.  I see what you mean with the foreground.  I didn't process this properly as I see that the details are there in the raw file.  A few years ago I always exposed so the histogram was more mid-to-dark, but noticed that it was then difficult to brighten the shadows.  Now I expose more mid-bright; I guess I need to learn to then process the highlights downward.  I know the details are there in my most recent postings, but I haven't had the time, energy, or expertise in the software to do it "right", I guess.  No excuse, I know.  Perhaps this explains why many of these most recent images are getting poorer ratings than I had expected or seen in my mind's eye.  I think I will take some time off from PN-- like 6 months to a year-- and try to become proficient with photo-software, and then revisit all my images for reprocessing.  I have become quite discouraged with the wealth of experts, sometimes anonymous or new, that provide negative ratings with no commentary as to why.  Thanks for staying upbeat!  I hope all is well with you, Jeff

Jeff - I am always hesitant to give feedback like I did since many people are sensitive to it. I felt that I knew you well enough to express what I thought was an area that could easily be 'improved' by post processing. Assigning a number anonymously without a constructive comment is still problematic here at Photo.net. However, I see some really good images get rated highly and I study them to see if there is something I can learn. Personally I have not put any images up for rating recently since most of my stuff would only be rated 'average to good" and it would not tell me much.

Don't give up on Photo.net for 6 months to a year to learn post processing.  If you were in Montreal, I would be happy to spend 30 minutes with you and show you the basic stuff I do with lightroom V5. An image with lots of white in it can be a challenge because there is not much tolerance (need to keep an eye on histograms) when post processing. I follow tutorials on the net once in a while and I am studying Luminosity masks now to see if it can help me in special situations. Last night I tried that technique but the end result was not usable and shareable. I have not given up on those masks as yet.

Google "Free lightroom 5 tutorial" if that is the software you use and you will be surprised how much stuff is up there.

All the best,

Thanks Tony.  I have Lightroom 5.7.1 and a few books on it, but I haven't had the time to get into it.  And I have the Nik Collection and Adobe CS5, but again haven't spent any time with them.  Have been using Capture NX 2.4.6 because it is really simple, but I know not the best.  Hopefully in May (after income tax time), I will have some time to begin learning how to use these other programs.  Thanks for your offer!  Jeff

I have Capture 1.3 which I only use under certain circumstances. CS5 and some Topaz products (e.g denoise V6,etc).
