Roma children outside their racially segregated school between

lessons in Michalovce. Slovakia is set to join the EU in May 2004.

Any comments etc welcome.

I can almost hear these kids. The one on the right is going to burst out in laughter the moment I look away. The angles, no horizontal or vertical anywhere, emphasize the feeling of playfulness. The white space is a little bit distracting. Wonderful photograph.

Hiya Gareth, Wow this one has real impact. Don't really see the problem with the background as my eyes follow their eyes and mouths across the picture.

It's a disgrace that countries with poor records of human rights still seem able to join the EU and NATO, suppose that show that neither organization lives up to what it claims to represent ... Tony

Thanks for the kind comments. I was down low shooting up at the children, it was a hot bright sunny day.

Tony, perhaps the EU is more interested in big buisiness than upholding it's human rights charter. Things though surely have to change in countries like Slovakia one way or another.

Great image lovely tone. Did you help the tone in photoshop or is it pure darkroom toning. Just one more question is Ilford warmtone much warm then the normal stuff or is the KRS helpingit along.

Hi Stuart. I printed it on Ilford warmtone RC and selenium toned it for about 15 minites at 1/12 dillution. I scanned it, desaturated it, set the levels and duo-toned it then turned it into a RGB image to adjust the saturation levels.

The colours you see here are very similar to those of the print, maybe a little stronger but not that much.

The Ilford warmtone is a different beast to MGIV, it had a creamy white rather than a pure white and seems to be capable of more depth particulary when used with Selenium. I don't think there is much point in using warmtone unless you dunk it in selenium, even just a couple of minutes in a 1/12 solution makes all the difference.

Thanks I shall get some warm tone RC. I should like a bit more depth in my prints and I don't want to go to fiber based paper because of washing and drying problems so the warm RC seems like it may be ideal.

Cheers........
