I prefer the spaceship theory but the experts say...

Former lighthouse, now Ancient Monument. Early C14. Built as a penance by the local landowner Walter de Godeton for disposing of the cargo of Church wine belonging to the monastery of Lives in Picardy, when the Saint Marie was wrecked on Atherfield Ledge in the Parish of Shorwell in 1314. The tower was built as a lighthouse to prevent further wrecks and there was originally an oratory chapel with a monk whose job was to trim the light and say masses for those lost at sea.

could be better in larger... but it's an excellent shot, congrats!

It is a very nice photo Colin! (but larger would be good - it's hard to see some details at this size on the screen).

Excellent shot and a beautiful one, in spite of its minimal size. And special thanks for that bit of history that comes bundled with it!

WOW Colin

This one is a beauty wery strong composition and nice lighting a little on the strong side but what the heck would make a fine poster any day.

Great! I've never had the opportunity to see the smaller version that you had posted here, but just the thumbnail view alone was enough to draw me into this one for a closer look.

Is it OK to say that it (the composition) has a Baldur Birgis feeling about it? But the history... We pat ourselves on the back about preserving buildings dating back to the 1830s. Now this is history!

Peter, I would be very happy to have the name of the excellent Baldur B mentioned in the same breath as this shot. Possibly the big velvia sky may have something to do with it!

Excellent Shot Carol! I just came back from Cape Cod and Rhode Island, guess what I was shooting? Light houses!

Just been trawling through your folder Colin (looking for ideas!) but I hadn't spotted this shot before. I'll be back watching the Atlantic skies from mid-August, but it looks like I'll have to get a proper wide angle lens ...

Sandeha, thanks for the compliment but I'm not sure I'm the best person for ideas! This shot was taken using an old 1970's 90/6.8 Angulon on to a 6x9 roll film holder so approximates to about 35mm moderate wide angle focal length taking 105mm as standard for 6x9.

This shot is very beautiful. The composition is excellent and I like the different aspect of the light that give rich colors.

Amazing building and fairly permanent tribute to the architect, builders and naughty landowner that vaporised the wine! The composition is excellent and the sky and coastline run the eye back to the dominant anyway lighthouse. Very nice Colin.

The spaceship idea is very nice, but only brought to mind by a great and well composed shot...

Happy new year (full of shots like this :-)

Nice to find this picture after a while. Great light and shadows, lovely composition. Nice story.

( At a first sight I thought it was something the monks built to protect themselves against the vikings year 976 or something )

Kind regards.

This is a little pearl of a photo. Beautiful colours and wonderful composition. Though I feel for the monk who had to sit out here. It must have been very cold during autumn and winter time. Poor monk that had to pay for the sins of a rich landlord...
