richard harris 0 Posted December 2, 2003 This is my favourite non-abstract photo of mine. While I was travelling in Australia I had visualised taking a shot on the western coast with the setting sun shining through a breaking wave with some craggy rocks in the foreground. We went to a beach called Bunker Bay near Margaret River one evening and here was my opportunity. Unfortunately my partner finds my photographic activities a little tiresome, but having negotiated some time to myself I was able to set up my tripod. I took seven rolls of film in just over half an hour in order to catch the perfect wave, and this is it. Interestingly, out of the 250 photos I took there was no others quite as good as this one - it wasn't that easy getting everything just right. Link to comment
joe_hodge 271 Posted December 2, 2003 I like the composition and lighting in this shot, but something about the coloration bothers me a bit. The entire picture looks to have a slight brownish cast that doesn't jive with my ideas of what water looks like. I'm assuming the coloration is manipulated and intentional, so I'm curious why you chose this particular tone? Link to comment
richard harris 0 Posted December 2, 2003 The colouration is indeed manipulated, the original photograph was shot on Velvia, as I had my film camera with me at the time. However I've grown tired of the look of Velvia, and indeed of colour landscapes, so I now prefer this monochrome version. I chose the brown coloration because I liked it. Link to comment
joe_hodge 271 Posted December 2, 2003 It's what you like that counts, certainly; I just can't manage to look at brown(ish) and see the sea. I like the monochrome, but would probably go for more of a blue-black. Link to comment
james_oneill 0 Posted December 2, 2003 Funny enough I tried doing a blue-black version before scrolling down to find Joe had done it. I prefer it that way too. Link to comment
