Aside from the excellent composition and tones, this is a fascinating image. I first thought it had to be a digital creation but since all the chairs are different I suppose not. Where was this that so many folding lawn chairs were set up?

that is in vienna on the square infront of the ratshaus (city council). there is some sort of music event they show on this huge screen.

the seats infront of it are for everybody, the charis behind on the tribunes are for paying customers.

the charis are very real.

i am the worst photoshop-user
 !!ever!! :)

thanks for your time though, appreciate the kind words. cheers

Hi Norbert,

Thanks for sharing.  As a child of the cold war and fan of Orwell's 1984, this image speaks to me.  I love how you've gone B&W and high ISO to give it an almost period feel.  The high contrast speaks volumes and really helps convey an oppressive mood.  Good use of wide angle distortion (thank you for not correcting it) to help create a figurative warped perspective.  I love the repetition and business of chairs contrasted against the flat, calming screen.  Nice balance.  I think you were standing at a slight angle to the screen that creates a slight tilt that's distracting (looking at the chairs closest to the viewer); i think if you were to do a minor perspective correction so those chairs were perfectly parallel to the border, you'd increase the "conformity" message.  Overall, a great image...BTW, if you haven't seen the Kubric movie, Dr. Strangelove, you should go watch that immediately!

thank you for your critique patrick!

first off: i am a huge kubric fan. must not add to this i suppose :)

the charis in the frontline..very well seen. the thing is..that the ground isn't level there.

also the chairs where not parallel to the screen as people move them about a bit when getting in and out. i did take different shots but i went with one where the screen is in the center and cut off a bit from top and bottom, it is a digital photo.

watch tv and do as you're told is a line out of a song, in this case from a band that was called "the pet goats", indie rockband from vienna that does not exist anymore.

it is ment in a social critical way and i am very glad that you got that.

thank you very much for your awesome critque.

next time i will try to get lines in order better, but as you sure do know, it is never that easy :)

thanks and have a good one!

But, I don't think it needs grains and the 1DS wouldn't make that kind of noise, especially on ISO400! Has perspective and good and attractive composition!

Best regards

thank you for your comment pierre.

with the grain i wanted to go for the look the old tvs had when there was a signal error but i do get your point as i too try to avoid it as often as i can but sometimes use it.

not everyone responds too well to that graina dded and i think it is a fair thing to say.

thanks!
