I am trying to remember the technical details. I am fairly sure that I bracketed three shots 1 stop apart. I think that I hand blended two exposures.  I have read somewhere that you can use spot metering to determine the exposure range and then depending on the capability of your camera, you can calculate how many exposures you need.

I try and keep the KISS (Keep It Stupid Simple) approach.

I have been working with the D300 and the Sigma 10-20mm  for so long now that it is almost intuitive how many bracketed shots I need - mostly 2, 3 or 5. Sometimes I use a GND filter to reduce the need for multiple exposures.
