What the hell?  This make no sense! The subject(s) are not related at all. And it doesn't look like they ever will relate. And the subjects are banal. Really, that first girl with what, playboy bunny-ears on her bi-phone? - how trite! Then the next one -- what a total definition of self absorbtion  & shallowness - in between two other humans  and located precisely between them so as not to engage either. Then there's him, not even bothering to make any pretence of excuse for ignoring every body else, he just arrogantly sits there. period.

And it's all captured in one photo. by one photographer. whose vision sees it all come together.

Perhaps the man in the scene needs to get with the program.  He is alienating himself from society by not fiddling with an electronic device.  Or, perhaps he simply is asserting his freedom.  Wayne's conclusion is well taken; the image is a compelling study of human behavior.

Jack, a superb capture, full of intimate detail, magnificently rendered in black and white. Thank you most sincerely for your supportive comments on my own images. It's really good to know that there is some reaction out there in the cyber wilderness. Best regards to you.

Hi Jack,

A very apt title for what is now the realities of modern life! Great shot, everyone sat down is so absorbed in there own little worlds! Very well seen and captured and B/W was the right way to go!

With best wishes. Sarah.

Thanks for the comments on this picture. I think it's only people of a certain age who will react at all to this picture. I don't think most young people would find anything odd or interesting in this picture. People just don't seem to be aware of either where they are or of the others who share their space. They exist in their own private bubbles. Twenty years ago, neither of the ladies would have been involved in their activities. Nowadays it's quite common in Japan to see young women putting on makeup on the train or in restaurants. Once I saw a young lady spend twenty minutes putting on her makeup - eye shadow, eye liner, lipstick, face powder, rouge even curled her eyelashes - on a crowded train, oblivious to the stares of the passengers around her. Then she capped off the performance by pulling out a can of hair spray and finishing off her hair. For an old coot like myself, I think the title says it all.

All over the world Jack! I've not a smart phone as of yet but I'm about to succumb. Hope I can resist the plague it brings forth. I've only learned to text as that is what my models do, they pretty much no longer use email... and if I want to have a dialogue with them, its the instant message feature on facebook... Yikes!
