This is a nice shot of the Great Blue Heron in flight! The lighting is pretty good to show the details on the top side of its wings as well the Heron's head, neck & feet. The feather details really can be seen when viewed in the larger version.

I recall someone once commenting on one of my Heron shots, . . . "Just think about taking a photograph of one of these creatures and they are certain to fly!"

There's a lot of truth in that in my experience. And, it looks like you were prepared and anticipating the Heron to take flight! Also looks like you got a good focus on the Heron's head & eye.

The bit of blur of the wing tips in my opinion adds a bit of movement and action to the shot.

If this is a crop, you might consider leaving a little more space for the Heron to fly into on the left side of the frame. But other than that little nit-picking, I can find no fault in the image.

I would be curious to know what lens you're using. I see it's shot at 400mm but the aperture at f/8.0 makes me wonder if possibly a Tele-converter might also have been used.

Regards always,

Thanks Jim - I think your suggestion of leaving a bit more room to the left is a good one.  It was a crop, so I'll have some room to play with on that side.

It was shot at 400 with no tele-converter. I was pretty close, and prepared, but not prepared enough to shoot in shutter priority mode... hence the blur on the wing tips.

I appreciate your thoughts.
