I like to see kids coasting up to the comfort zone: very much like dogs do. Children and their inventive ways of appropriating couch space is something I miss, watching them so sinewy and adaptable; so comfortable in their bodies.

the background shenanigans here are but intrusions, the electronic warriors, the chopped head, don’t much matter, as the picture belongs to the beautiful actress, and belongs to you for so gently capturing her dream space. I remember a picture of your son that visits that same place, a picture that you managed with the same photographic approach. You, Marjolein, the invisible photographer with a knack for grabbing the tender intimacy.

Marjolein, This is a wonderful portrait. While I agree that the girl is the star of this show, the boys in the background contribute to the story. Beautiful work.

Geez, Marjolein, you're at it again. You just seem to have the ability to zero in on those moments that just naturally elicit an emotional response in the viewer. This is such an instant with nothing really happening and yet with your composition and the way they're sitting and watching (tv? a video game?) it just seems to sum up the relaxed insouciance of childhood.

The only thing giving away when this photo was made is the Nintendo in the backgrond, otherwise it's as timeless a photo as can be. The girl captivated, the boys don't care....a familiar scene, and quite universal, I'd say. This photo captures it perfectly.

As other said, it's got your trademark all over. Intimate and captivating without feeling intrusive, romantic but just right, as ever.

This is a natural children photo. I love the girl's expression, which I think, is  not impressed by your camera ,as well as the kid in the BG. As usual with your kids photography, your timing is always so accurate!...;-))

Carlos, Amy, Jack, Roberto, Ruud, Wouter, and Pnina, Thank you for your thoughts on this pic.

I value- and enjoyed reading you words, and I'm glad that you appreciated this (un-cropped) photo of this little moment.

It's a very cinematic photo with multiple story lines converging as your more pensive and almost melancholy-seeming daughter practically bursts out of the frame at me and the boys in the background, darker, more . . . well . . . boylike, are transfixed so differently by the same world. Bare feet often suggest intimacy . . . here, I would add sweetness. Your daughter's projecting knee made me think of BILL BRANDT, someone whose approach to the body and tonality (with very different content from yours) I've always marveled at. Your lighting adds contrast between your daughter and sons without severing the relationship, which is compositionally established in other ways, particularly by her toes pointing back to your son's in an almost Michelangelo-like gesture.

Fred, Thank you for your (as always) insightful comments.
I enjoyed reading them, and I'm sorry for not responding to you sooner.

For a variety of reasons I'm not that often present on PN of late.

I like your reference to the word 'cinematic', as I tried to portray a (simple) scene / narrative indeed with this.

Interesting your remark re: Bill Brandt - it hadn't really occurred to me beforehand, but I can see where you're coming from.
(although not quite relate to the photo you linked to, which seems to emphasize a much more graphic aspect of the body as such)

Btw, I went to see the B. Brandt exhibit at the MoMA last summer - was great!

(PS: the girl pictured isn't my daughter actually :-)

Sorry for only getting back to you now, Pnina -- I haven't been on PN in a while and see you left a comment a while back. My files aren't deleted, just hidden, for now... Seems I'm juggling too many balls at the moment. Keeping the PN door ajar though, not completely closing it... Hope you're keeping well!
