Days after being bailed from Dungavel Detention Centre for Refugees,

Mercy and her 18mnth old daughter are back at Dungavel, but this time

on the 'STUC Close Dungavel Now!' demonstartion platform.

I don't think the angle works in this one.. especially when both the woman and child seem to be looking just over the top of the camera. Its quite an unsettling feeling, looking at their faces... you think they're looking at you (as normal) but they're not quite. I think this would be an interesting theme in a more dramatic and abstract portrait, but its unsettling in this setting.

It's just a case of grabbing what one can get. I need a press pass to get access to the platform, I did well to get this close from below. If the picture is slightly disturbing that's OK. This mother and her child a few days ago were in prison despite having commited no crime.

Is this image cropped? It's not unsettling because the woman went to prison but because you are looking up the poor woman's nose. It may have been take ehat you can get but what you got isn't working visually. It's like you are trying to hit us over the head with the significance of the subject matter, like Injustice with a capital I and so on. Back off your subjects and stop trying to make everything so Important with a capital I.

I was quite happy with it Elliot. I thought Mercy had a look of defiance as she looks out into the crowd, meanwhile Percile-Liz has spotted me and is looked straight at the lens.

Couldn't get on the platform (and frankly didn't want to) and couldn't move back for three reasons, the thousands standing behind me, I was already heading towards 200mm, my flash gun won't throw much further.

 

Personally I think it's shameful that in Scotland we lock up men women and children who have commited no crime, that's why I was there that day, not just to take pictures but to take part.
