To show common things in an uncommon way, that's art. To provoke thought about common things that makes you think about them, that's art. To show common things in the way that everyone else sees it, provoking absolutely no thought in either the photo or the title, that's just wasting people's time.

Chad, At the risk of being called for 'piling on' you must have had a slow day at the time of making this shot. On the plus side, the composition is good (the shadow from the switch extending to the bottom of the frame) and the high light position does reveal the texture of the wall nicely. Far cry from your museum shot. Best, LM.

From my point of view I think this is a nice picture. The tones are great and, yes we see light switches everyday, but not quite like this.

Any chance of a companion image called 'Off'? You could then place them side-by-side and we could have hours of fun contemplating the philosophical dichotomy. Of course, to viewers like myself in merry old England this switch already signifies 'off'. Upside-down light switches are just another manifestation of American eccentricity, along with your peculiar spelling and driving on the wrong side of the road... This is an immensely boring picture, but its banality doesn't disqualify it from being called 'art'. And the fact that five silly people have already stopped to look at it and pass comment surely demonstrates a measure of success.

Trevor and all,

Thanks for the comments. I think it is lacking something from a physical print. I have had some comments (legitimate comments) on a couple other shots that the scan was lacking. So, I think I need to spend some more time reducing before posting.

A 300 dpi prints has great depth and an almost 3 dimensional quality to it. When mounted on a wall at light switch height, and printed in 8x12 (which make the switch itself 1:1), it grabs attention much more.

So Ive been told.

I like doing the things that take a little longer than 5 second to absorb. A lot of the pictures that get good ratings on this sight seam to grab you in the first few seconds. This one, you need to linger at a little.

With all that said, is the light switch really on? :)
