Alex,   I like this image.  It must be viewed in larger mode to appreciate the detailed lines on the field and the sense of vast distance due to your excellent DOF.  My question is whether you want to crop the sky significantly to emphasize the land more?   I guess this is a matter of your taste and judgment. I tried out the crop for you. Thanks for posting this image.  Larry

Beautiful prairie picture - reminds me of many weeks spent traveling the back roads of Nebraska. I agree with Larry, his crop, in my opinion, expresses the vastness of the plains better.

Beautiful view, and reminds me of my own native fields come early summer. I also agree with the suggestion to crop, which not only emphasizes the field but also seems to darken the image somewhat. Lowering the sky was actually my first thought when I looked at the photo, but that seems to be my default setting anyway (laughs). I love the extended depth-of-field which captures the near detail of the grass along with the more distant texture of the mow lines, as well the many small differences in light and shadow throughout... all of which really reveals the subtle undulations in the land. Very nicely done.

Thanks Larry for the visit and for your suggestion! I spent quite a while at the spot and tried several different framings, including some with less sky and more land.

In the end I found that this framing represents best what I was feeling at the time, namely being in a place where prairies and skies lay down in infinite parallel layers.

Best regards, Alex

Cristoph, it seems to me that we are commonly amazed by the vastness of the land and feel the need to emphasize it because we are taking the vastness of our skies in this part of the world for granted. I asked one German friend of mine that was visiting what he found most striking in North America: "I've never seen so much sky in my entire life!" he said.

Well, I tried to be "land / sky fair" in this composition!

Thanks for your visit and best regards, Alex

Bernard, I wonder if lowering the sky is actually a shortcut we tend to take instead of shooting an honest panoramic shot? The resulting flatter form factor makes me think that deep inside we feel the need to express "vastness" through "extra width".

Isn't this also the way we express it in conversation and gestures, by stretching our arms wide apart?

Thanks for the visit and the kind comments, best regards, Alex
