alfbailey 6 Posted January 19, 2014 Have you noticed the way everyone watches people that are fishing, it's because they want to be there doing just that themselves! The colours in the background are most striking, and dare I say look surreal, but knowing you, I don't think you will have done much or indeed anything to accentuate them. Magical moment! Compliments! Alf
hstelljes 41 Posted January 19, 2014 Hi Len, That's quite spectacular. I also like the foreground scene but that rainbow color is rather eye catching. Could you explain, is it a mirage?? All in all a very cool image. Take care.Best Regards,Holger
LenMarriott 9 Posted January 20, 2014 You are likely correct about the wannabe fishermen. As for the 'surreal colours', well I may as well 'fess up and tell you that I did increase the overall saturation about 20% as otherwise the 'rainbow' came through much softer than I remembered it. Perhaps I over did things a tad. 10 or 15 % may have done the job. As usual, in my rush to post, I didn't experiment enough. As I adjusted the saturation sliders the colours suddenly 'popped' and I said "Whoa, that'll do"! I caught this one 'on the fly', so to speak. (pun intended) Was walking past & noticed the rainbow increase in intensity & then quickly fade away. I walked back to the 'sweet spot' and had time for one exposure before others entered & complicated the scene. As it turns out I framed the original one too loosely for my tastes, thus the crop. Many thanks for your most welcome visit and constructive critique. Don't be a stranger. Best, LM.
LenMarriott 9 Posted January 20, 2014 I may as well show you the originally framed image. At this location, to the right of the angler, there is a decorative fountain which sends water 30 or 40 feet into the air. There was a stiff wind blowing from right to left causing a very heavy spray at times. With the sun at the right angle a very pronounced rainbow became visible, enhancing an otherwise ordinary scene. I've sat on this one since Sept. 2013 finally deciding what to do with it. Hence, my original post. Hope this clears up the mystery for you and others. Thanks very much for your interest. Best, LM.
hstelljes 41 Posted January 20, 2014 It not only clears it up it gives me an appreciation as to your choices. And I think you chose very wisely and nicely Len. Have a great day.Best Regards,Holger
LenMarriott 9 Posted January 20, 2014 Thanks for the follow up. Sometimes (most often?) we don't get it right in camera and a crop, sometimes severe, is called for. At that point those often excessive megapixels come into their own. As you can see the original post is only about 1\4th of the original 16mp file. Still enough for the 9x6 print I made of it. Best, LM.
ray.koushik 0 Posted January 21, 2014 Very nice composition/crop. you have quite a rainbow of colors on the ground itself...her blue jacket, red bucket and gree grass --- a wonderful dual rainbow. compliments -koushik
LenMarriott 9 Posted January 21, 2014 Thanks for your observations. The 'dual' rainbow aspect had eluded me until you mentioned it but I must agree. Nothing wrong with a little balance in one's photos. :-) Best, LM.
alfbailey 6 Posted January 22, 2014 Thank you for showing the un-cropped version, it allows a fuller appreciation of your chosen crop, and I must say I think I would have chosen to do the very same thing! It give that illusion of isolation so much better! Cheers Len! Alf
LenMarriott 9 Posted January 22, 2014 Thanks for your follow up & validation. Had I been a more familiar with using this camera I may have taken a second shot @ 200mm which would have brought me closer to this crop in-camera and negated the need to crop post. I should get better as time goes on. Stay tuned! :-) Best, LM.
steveshinn 0 Posted January 28, 2014 Very nice shot and presentation. The story line makes it even more interesting. It looks like one could hook the pot of gold here.
LenMarriott 9 Posted January 28, 2014 Barrie's waterfront is indeed a jewel; the pot of gold if you will. And it's slated for some major upgrades in the next few years. Finally, a use of my tax dollars that I agree fully with. Lot's of photographic material for anyone visiting or living here. Thanks for your visit. Best, LM.
greg mccracken 13 Posted February 4, 2014 Good idea on the crop, Len. I never would have guessed what was creating the rainbow without the explanation and/or the full frame view! Beautiful sharp and crisp colours.
LenMarriott 9 Posted February 5, 2014 Sometimes a few words, not necessarily 1000, help in describing how one got from the initial capture to the finished frame. You are probably familiar with this location in Centenial Park Barrie. Best, LM.
LenMarriott 9 Posted February 21, 2014 Your constructive comment\critique will be gratefully received. LM.
LenMarriott 9 Posted February 22, 2014 In truth, a hurried grab shot. Thus the loose crop of the original. This is what I saw but failed to capture in camera. 'Brilliance' after the fact. :-) Excess megapixels saved my bacon this time. (and a few other times I can think of) Thanks for your visit & most welcome comment. Best, LM.
LenMarriott 9 Posted December 9, 2014 I'm a little unsure of the meaning of your shorthand on this one but I'm most pleased to know you've taken the time & effort to both view and acknowledge it. Most appreciated. I knew I had something worthwhile at the time of exposure but it took me a while in post to dig out what I consider to be the gold. Tough to get it exactly right in camera sometimes. LM.
