At first I scoffed at this silly warning sign, which seemed out of place

in Eureka Valley... one of the most remote desert valleys in

California. But soon I understood the import. After driving for 30

miles on a rough washboard dirt road, you come to a pleasant ~5

mile stretch of old paved road. With no other cars or civilization in

sight, the temptation is to speed up, quite a bit, but the paved section

turned out to be deceptively bumpy and pocked. In fact, I almost lost

control. That will teach me!
