Walter

andrew_somerset1

Walter, a former competitive ski jumper, fell 20 feet from a tree stand while deer hunting and broke his femur in several places. He was forced to spend a night in the woods, unable to move, until his truck was spotted by a search helicopter the following day.

This was done to accompany a story on Walter, who fell over 20 feet

from a tree stand, breaking his femur in several places. He was deer

hunting within a couple of miles of his home and had neglected to

tell anyone where he was going. A former competitive ski jumper and

cyclist, he was forced to draw on his reserves of courage and

discipline to survive a November night on the forest floor until a

search helicopter spotted his truck the next morning.

Nice shot. The accompanying story gives a good background. I like the lighting and everything about this composition.

Great composition and lighting! Did you use a reflector as fill, or did you use flash?

Very intresting bokeh also.

The lighting is dead simple. It was dark in the woods (the tree he fell from is at left) and I lit him with a single SB-28 flash, off-camera to the right. This shows in the big lighting flaw, i.e. the harsh shadow cast by his collar.

The background is kinda weird -- it's just the sky poking through some leaves.
