I heard a bunch of noise in the cupboard and there they were. They looked like this right out of the bag. I said, "Boys, portrait?" They jumped at the opportunity. Seriously, the success of an image like this lies in shooting the main set and the faces under the same lighting conditions. Without the same directional lighting, the image will fail from a technical standpoint.

Terrific ! You can look at it for some time in hope to catch some new detail you missed.

could you tell us how did you create this piece of art ?

Very impressive work! Iam often overly critical when viewing this type of image, usually looking for faults and reasons why it doesnt look authentic. But i cant fault this, your attention to detail is quality. I especially like the potato with his face pressed on the glass bowl!

Standing heads and spuds over the blather of flowers, landscapes, cityscapes, nudes that I see on this site (I include myself in the blather) your image is one that blends everthing-concept, composition, quality and execution.

First the base shot is well lit, very well setup. You thought about the little things like the recipe the peeler and masher. This is what caught my eye first.

Second, Your ranges of faces that you used on the potatoes are quite different and varied. This is what kept me looking at the shot for quite awhile.

In my opinion, you have showed a mastery of photography and Photoshop to bring a desired affect.

Great job guy! I hope you make it to the "Shot of the Week".

Dick, Check out your local advertising agencies and see if they might be interested in your work. You can also pick up a copy of "Photographer's Market - 2003" and market your photo to agencies that specialize in humorous photos. With something this creative you should have no problem at all getting serious interest. You could also think about animation studios such as Pixar or even the Claymation folks ("Chicken Run") if you're interested in selling your creative ideas. All the best to you!

Sorry, I don't know how to create the link yet. The site is new - I don't have any copy yet, just images at this point. The response to this photo has been just amazing. It's really inspiring me to finish up some of my works in progress!

How did you come up with this idea? Did you have the face idea in mind when you shot this or were you working on a promotional/culinary piece?? This is phenomenal!

Sorry Dick, I didn't realize you already did this full-time. Ignore my previous comments... it was meant well. Cheers, Margaret

Why did the Sorcerer's broom come alive in Fantasia? I love the way Disney gives inanimate objects human features. I think that's what intrigues us all. You have to go back to being a kid. You have to think like a kid.

I have a philosophy that the guy that I use to build my sets, process my film, edit my images, and choose my models all must be of one mind...MINE! In order to pull an image like this off, you can't just take some random faces and drop them on vegetables in Photoshop. In addition to color changes, and edge softening, I actually had my models "pose" with a certain potato in mind. I shot the base shot first, and then had my models pose for each potato.

I often feel like a magician. If I share a step-by-step tutorial, wouldn't it take the fun away? I'm not so much worried about someone learning my technique as I am worried about ruining the magic of the photo. You are all so enthused and that's the fun of it all.

Your thoughts are much appreciated.

Dick
