I heard a bunch of noise in the cupboard and there they were. They looked like this right out of the bag. I said, "Boys, portrait?" They jumped at the opportunity. Seriously, the success of an image like this lies in shooting the main set and the faces under the same lighting conditions. Without the same directional lighting, the image will fail from a technical standpoint.

Great impact, great technique. Of course I would appreciate more information on how this image was created. The technical specs are a bit cryptical: I do not think there are Canon 50mm lenses for the Mamiya RB67.

That's hilarious. Very cleverly done, and very well executed technically from the lighting right through the faces. The mashing is a pretty cartoony violence, but the peeler adds a slight horror element, I must say. If I were to nit-pick composition, I sorta wish the top of the food processor weren't quite exactly tangential with the edge of the image, but that's really picking a nit. Excellent stuff. Enjoy.

Michele, you are right. I used my RB 67 to photograph the potato set and used my 35mm to photograph the "faces."

Wow, incredibly well done. The faces are believably integrated, down to the wrinkles on the "forehead" of the potato near the peeler. I think my favorite, though, is the guy in the upper center of the bowl who doesn't look scared at all ... I think he's planning an escape as soon as the chef isn't looking.

this is a super creation dick - esp like the retro look to the beater, the angle of the masher and of course the expressions on those faces!!!

I love this. Not only does it catch the eye from a distance but you keep looking at the various expressions on the potato peoples faces. Call me sinister, but it made me laugh!

Thanks for the great feedback. The shoot itself took me about a day. I probably spent 3 solid days worth of time in Photoshop piecing it all together.

This is BRILLIANT!! Not only do you have an exquisitely creative (and twisted) mind, hats off to your PS skills! This is the sort of thing one sees in Pixar animations (hey, if you can animate this, I'll do the voices ;-) Absolutely hysterical!!

I agree, this should be POW.

This is brilliant, and beautifully executed. Could you please post a Photoshop tutorial on the details of how you did this?

I'm pretty sure you didn't spend three days on this just to upload it to photo.net! :-) I checked out your website and can only say that I hope you upload some of your other work including what appear to be product shots.

Dick, do you intend to market this image and sell prints of it?

I am very curious how you got the faces to work so well. Did you photograph different people you knew, darken/lighten their faces to a potato color, then superimpose it using the subtract feature in Photoshop? I am intrigued to know!

Laura, I would love to either sell prints of this or to find a market for my potato pals! I'll take suggestions! I produced this for my own amusement and have loved the response so far. I'm trying to decide how to best "explain" my technique.
