John Peri 1,032 Posted November 25, 2013 It is very difficult to critique abstract works, particularly with regards to meaning. I once read an interview with Picasso in which he said that the nonsense critics wrote about his paintings sometimes reached extraordinary proportions! The worst I find is when you walk around museums and listen to the guides telling you what the painter had for breakfast! And so, to concentrate on the creativity, it remains as always flourishing, the technique is personal and distinctive to your style as it should be also. To create shadows that correspond to physical reality would be closer to the realist movement started by Courbet, than to the surrealism that became fashionable almost a century later and characterizes much of your work. It is always a pleasure to visit your pages Pierre, sometimes I am amused, sometimes troubled, but I always leave enriched by the experience. Link to comment
Pierre Dumas 273 Posted November 25, 2013 Hristaki, you made quite a speech and a good one! But you are wrong in one thing, a statue has been erected for the unknown roller-man! Thank you for your thorough expressing your attitude to wards art in general and mine included! PDE Link to comment
Pierre Dumas 273 Posted November 25, 2013 Thank you Wanghan, I know you love my art but I think you should be more explicit about the philosophy in this one expressed if not a harsh critiquer as I asked for! PDE Link to comment
Pierre Dumas 273 Posted November 25, 2013 All well said as always John, I think but that you are more inclined to diplomacy than critique! I must say that this is a pure surreal work and categorized in abstracts only because PN doesn't know about surrealism! In each , let's say category of art, style maybe would be more appropriate the rules of the aesthetics must be obeyed I think and the wrong done shadows give an impression of ugly! Not because they are not really in that angle, just because they are not straight in one line! Picasso once did a advertising poster for a high budget partisan film and asked about the price he only asked for a box of Yugoslav wine! PDE Link to comment
michaellinder 16,612 Posted November 26, 2013 With your images I get lost in trying to interpret their meanings, both on the surface and way down in the rabbit hole. As a result, I rarely bring up matters of technique. But if you want a "harsh critique" . . .We see a bright sun in the background. The horseback rider is closer to the sun than the rollerblader. Yet his shadow is of the same degree of intensity. It should be stronger, i.e., darker.I hope this works for you.Ciao, michael Link to comment
Pierre Dumas 273 Posted November 26, 2013 Of course it works Michael, this is surreal picture requiring surrealistic critique!Thank you for that! PDE Link to comment
patrick_coombes 0 Posted November 26, 2013 Very creative work Pierre, its fun and i love it. I love the comments of Alf above. I wont make any harsh comments but noting that you are greatly inspired by Salvatore Dali, not the same degree of talent though. Well done my friend!Very best regards.Paatrick Link to comment

Pierre Dumas 273 Posted November 27, 2013 Hey, Patrick! I thought you will never come to harsh critique my picture! I must see somewhere that Dali guy, people compare me with him and I haven't even seen what's he done!Thank you, Patrick! PDE Link to comment

donev1 710 Posted November 28, 2013 Hi Pierre, again a lot of discussions for yours “patented” shadows – I like them very much. Some times original is much better than correct. Best regards. Link to comment
Pierre Dumas 273 Posted November 28, 2013 The truth, even the scientifically supported is dull, I agree with you my friend Evgeni! Wedird but original is more interesting and as such more attractive! Thank you for supporting me twice today only! PDE Link to comment
andrzejp 7 Posted November 29, 2013 Wonderful piece of art. Correcting art like in the attached image is a total nonsense. How about reshaping a watch in Salvador Dali painting ? Changing color in Van Gogh painting to more natural shades? Link to comment
Pierre Dumas 273 Posted November 29, 2013 Oh, welcome Andrew, long gone friend! You are returning from some other planet? You forgot that we live in two poles world, right and wrong, correct and incorrect, good and bad...etc!?You gave us all a reprimand and I would say a harsh reprimand for critiquing! You are not right my friend! Four eyes see better than two! And there is some harmony, something we would all want to achieve, some balance, something that we call perfection and our minds know when the eyes see it or the ears hear it! But not always that fast and that good, therefore exists critique, debate, exchanging of views.By the way you have told yours! Thank you for your contribution to the discussion my dear friend!
