What's the story behind the Thud?

This is a cartridge start.

Once the engine is running the spent cartridge is removed and a fresh one is installed.

It was taken on the flightline at
Wheelus AFB, Libya in the early 60's

The 49th TFW from Spangdahlem AFB, Germany was there for bombing and gunnery pilot qualification.

A MN1a practice bomb dispenser is on the centerline store.

Two 450 drop tanks are on the inside stores.

Two sidewinder rails are on the outside stores.
