behind the fence

johnny_nguyen2

lowered the brightness, bumped up the contrast, desaturated, colorized, cropped, framed. My intent was to make it appear as if the monkey, with his wonderfully large eyes, seem to fade and get lost into the blackness of the cage. The slope of his shoulders hints that there's more to him, but he is obscured behind the fence... I couldn't help but be drawn into the sad and curious look on his eyes and how he bites onto the fence... The fence really adds that extra sense of perspective and framing. I look forward to your critiques.

Not your typical portrait, but still I think it fits. The goal of a

portrait is to a capture a sense of the character or personality of

the person having their portrait taken... To me this monkey had lots

of character and I hope I captured a sense of it. The image was

originally captured in color, but I felt it looked better in a

simpler composition.

Very good capture of emotions. I never thought, monkey eyes can be so appealing! It seems, he has a story to tell. I always hated to capture animals in zoo, because of that ugly fence around them. But in your case, it help increase the originality of your photo.

good work

After my visit to the zoo yesterday- I applaud your use of the fence- ordinarily this woul hinder most- but you used it to yell the real story- this takes the photo to another level- rather than just a 'nature/animal' photo....nice PS work too- works exactly as you hoped.

This could be a self-portrait for a lot of people...granted we live better than most caged monkeys, but who hasn't felt trapped by their own lives...face pressed up against the cage seeing what they know exists, but is always just out of reach? Aren't we all just "monkeys with nice shoes?" (line stolen from some comedian I think)

Thanks Johnny,

Mike

Judging from the above comments and my own feeling, you have created quite an emotional photograph. I have no choice but a 7/7. A monkey in a cage may not be that original, But your depliction certainly is one of kind.

Very emotional, makes me feel incredibly sad. I think we all feel like that at times - hard to convey in a single exposure but you've done an excellent job of it. I've a feeling I shall long remember this pensive face.
