Its a Tiger Rat snake (Spilotes pullatus), locally they call them "Mica". They like to spend their time in low growing trees and large bushes. The locals say that when threatened, they will defend themselves by smacking you with their tail. I have yet to see that happen. But, they do display a behavior to distract or lead would be predators away. These snakes get to be quite long and they spend most of their time draped on the thin branches in the crown of the tree their in. If they feel threatened they will start vibrating the end of their tail in the leaves often several feet away from their head. When they see you go to take a closer look they quietly slip away.
