Hallgrimskirkja. Icelandic landscape / Hraun in Öxnadalur

Faith: Shutter speed 1/125 Aperture f/11. One shot. This image was the first one in a 129 digital photo exhibition in Reykjavik on 16.8. 2003. The theme was " A day in Reykjavik" That day we have a "Cultere Night" here in Reykjavik. Other image of mine, in my "Iceland - IMAGE" folder, "Friendship" was the final image in the same show. Story behind this building: Hallgrimskirkja 1957. At Skolavorduholt in Reykjavik and fronted by the statue of Leifur Eiriksson, stands the church HALLGRIMSKIRKJA.This church is designed by the architect Gudjon Samuelsson and this was one of his favourit and most challenging tasks. He wrote himself: "I took it for granted that the caracter and style of this church should be Gothic, as the gothic style is the most beautiful in church buildings. On the other hand, I wanted the church to bear a style of Icelandic landscape and nature. Our landscape is so totally different from whatI have experienced in my travels to other countries. Our mountains are extremely sharp and naked, - without any trees or forests. This, for instance clearly seen at the mountainpeaks of Hraun in Oxnadalur, in northern Iceland and I did have these in mind when I made the initial plans for this church". This image is dedicated to faith, which we should never lose. Special thanks to Francesco Bittarelli. Thanks in advance for your ratings and comments. Copyright: Baldur Birgis

Baldur, as many others have stated, this is an impressive picture. Composition and tonality are faultless. It's almost as if the concrete (stone?) was taking flight.

very good one Baldur... I am not very much active in commenting/rating recently but I found this one was treated very originally for this kind of genre (architecture). Angle and disposition within the frame make the difference to what could have easily be a 'regular postcard' on Top Gallery! ;^)!

Excellent photo, Baldur! I admire more and more your portfolio and this pic is one of my favourite. I like in particular the curved line wich gives extreme dynamicity: it seems to be a calligraphic signature. I also like the contrast between the clouds on the left and on the right hand side, and the feeling of prehistoric antiquity that the bell tower gives me.

I guess this is the best architecture work in your folder. great use of wide angle. Impact is very strong.

Mister Ken: Thank you for your kind comment. No I wasn´t. Some Icelandic photographers have asked me where I precisely was after been looking for the right spot with their 24mm lenses! A part of the resault is the lens I used which is one of the 'Star Performer's lens within the FD series of optics.

Kind regards,

Excellent photograph,7/7. I like the tone and composition, the way the church curves & points towards the light in the sky, even the rear end does. Still I can't help wondering whether you manipulated "the deep blue sky" somehow?

Jon Baldvin, thank you for your commment and rating. I am proud of this image which is unmanipulated. I have nothing against manipulation. Some images made that way are great work in my opinion. It is just not my way to make photographs.

Kind regards, Baldur
