The Mokoluas, Oahu

vincetylor

Taken at LaniKai beach on another hot Summer day. It's fun to watch people taking their kayaks and heading over to the Mokolua islands for a picnic or just to explore. These waters are almost always calm since they are protected by the outer reef. Your thoughts and opinions are always appreciated. www.hawaiianphotos.net

You keep on making Hawai as the paradise! :-)

Good use of polarizer to make the clouds look more separated from the sky. Also your mastering of a not-that-easy-to-use Velvia is obvious, you keep on taking the best of it.

A perfect balance in its composition and colours.

Great contrasts between the intense blue of that sky, which announces a possible tropical storm, and the serene stillness of that turquoise sea.

The two islets and the line of foam in the center both add to this unique composition.

Vincent, Do you have a shot giving precedence to the sky? The water here is unbelievably beautiful but the sky trumps it in my opinion. In addition to the other version with the sand did you manage one in which the sky occupies about 2/3 of the total image? Since you admit to 'working' an area thoroughly perhaps you have the one I described in your files. Awed, as ever, LM.

Sooo...what was wrong with the old scan? I have to say, Vince, that this one is great (in keeping with your usual style)! I especially like the 2/3rds ocean foreground leading up to the minimalistic presentation of the two islands; a somewhat surreal view for me. The swirls of sea foam in the middle are a nice touch. The Velvia greens and blues are perfect. I would like to see the cloud tops not truncated at the upper edge of the frame. But, of course, this would mean that the 2/3rds foreground would reduce to 1/2, with the horizion straight through the middle, so forget this idea. Leave it as it is. Regards.

Thanks Walt. I would like to see if I have any with less sky as well, but I don't think so. Back when I took this, several years ago, I often composed locations like this here with more than 1/3 sky. Closer to 1/2 actually. Some of my newer images from this location, and from any location for that matter, are composed a little more 2/3 rule of thumb. But then again, what's really correct and incorrect when it comes to capturing a scene like this? I just liked how it looked...

Thanks for the visit and taking the time to share your thoughts.

All the best,

Vince
