"Cuddled Up"
The White-breasted Woodswallow (Artamus leucorynchus) is a small passerine bird which breeds from the Andaman Islands east through Indonesia and northern Australia. I took this photo in Featherdale Park, Sydney. The name "woodswallow" is a misnomer as they are not closely related to true swallows. Instead, they belong to the family Artamidae, which also includes butcherbirds, currawongs and the Australian Magpie. The white-breasted Woodswallow has large, pointed wings - very agile in powered and gliding flight. Interesting to observe them catching insects in their wings! I took this shot on a cold, rainy day - which brings out another typical characteristic of these birds: they cuddle together tightly leaving no space between!
