A few days ago the eggs my turkey hen has been sitting on for the last

month finally hatched. She's been pretty good about letting me handle

the chicks (her mother wasn't nearly as accommodating). Anyways I

figured I would see if I could get something interesting out of them.

I placed them on a ledge in the coop as their mother kept a very

suspicious eye on me. The chicks didn't seem to mind though. Each

seemed to be of in it's own little world, completely ignoring the

shutter noise of my camera.

What do you think of the darkening of the edges of the image? I think

it might be a little over done, but I'm curious as to what others think.

It's a wonderful image, and I like the way they are arranged.  As for the darkening.....I do like it, but I wonder if the distinct line could be softened a bit so it looks more gradual.  Now it almost looks like the chicks are in a spot-light.  Although, even like this, if you hadn't asked for suggestions, I would still say it's an outstanding image!

You were able to get everyone looking in your direction, and that is a big plus! The image is very good the way it is. Warm regards.

A marvelous picture and aptly titled.  I have seen the young of chickens but with turkeys only the older ones (they are not as cute as these).  As for your vignetting, it works well, except for the chick at far left.  He seems to be getting a bit dark - can't see his tail end at all.  I especially like your color scheme: yellows and oranges - works very well.

Christal, yeah, that's part of what I was unsure about, the abruptness of the darkening. I tried a version with a darkening that was perfectly even and smooth and I didn't really like it. This version seemed more "organic", for lack of a better word, to me. But maybe I'll get around to giving it another go and smoothing the darkening out more.

Jorge, yeah it was one of the few images that I took where one of them wasn't facing the wall or hiding behind one of the others.

Jerry, I agree, the chick a the far left is darker than I would have liked. It's part of the reason I did the darkening, in the original the left side of the image is in a shadow. I figured the darkening of the rest of the edges would make it seem part of the rest of the image. Normally I wouldn't have bothered, but it was the compositionally most pleasing of all the images I took. I can't quite explain it other than the arrangement of the chicks and their postures is simply pleasing to my eye. None of the other images compared well. But if I get around to It maybe I can selectively lighten the chick in the shadow to even out the lighting.

Hello Siegried

A nicely caught moment. I like the warm tones and the poses of the chicks. I feel the vignette is a little abrupt and the left chick is rather dark. I might suggest softening the vignette to make it seem part of the pattern of light that's falling on the scene. An lightening the left chick to more closely match the tone of the others. I did a quick edit to show what I mean, just my 2 cents.

Regards

Greg
