In my opinion, you had the f-stop too wide open at F5.6 and the white is too hot which you tried to adjust to tone down some hot spots and that make the image a bit dull looking. Ideally, this probably should be shot at F7.1 or F8 to get the white properly exposed. I get burn like this all the time with many image of bird that mix white & black plummage also and the only way to get good image is to shoot in lighter/weaker sunlight such as early morning or late afternoon. As for this shot what you can do is go ahead and process for most of the white to look good and clone the hot spot (if possible). Here's my take on this image after runing 'auto tone' and the clone out the hot spots around the neck of both birds. Just my opinon, TFS!

I actually run 'auto tone' and 'auto contrast'.

There's a lot that is really nice about this shot. Wonderful action with a touching moment, great low perspective and nice background. Tm had some good comments, but I really like it.

LOL, just hope that my comment does not offend you Phillip or other viewers. Note that I used to be on a critique site a few years back and I am used to comment as such. Looking at this image this morning I think if you had cut the ISO down to 200 it would have tone down the white just fine too.

In any event, I am glad Phil chime in since the image is cropped well with the bird's head in the 1/3 upper right position which draw more attention. The pose is wonderful  and I always like birdshot with the sparkle in the eye/eyes . Also  like the bit of yellow spring flower in the background and the black shown good details.
